Doug and I had a great time at Wallaby. Got there by 11:30 on Thursday. Was on tow by 1:30. Next day blown out so did Sky Coaster and SkyVenture (latter more fun). Next day blown out so did Cypress Gardens (free pass, otherwise pass altogether) and Redskins game with 6 pack in hotel room. Next day boowah. Did short out and return. Next day did first lesson with Mike Barber. Going back Mar 24-28 and will do lesson with MB all days if flyable. Watch out for me during the Region 9 comps!

Keeping this short since I'm writing something for the Mountaineer newsletter.

After watching the forecast and seeing that the the winds were suppose to be NW @ 10 and the call for snow tonight and Thursday, Terry Spencer and I decided to do one last flight at Woodstock before they closed the gate for the winter. I scheduled some work in Shenandoah County for the morning and was done and at launch at 10:30. It honking in, but at least it was straight in. I carried my glider in and headed for the LZ to meet Terry.

We were back at launch by 11:30 where the wind were still NW, but had slowed to 0-5. While we were setting up it would cycle up to 10, but then slack off quickly. I moved into position at launch, and waited. Then I waited some more. And then I waited. Finally it puffed in at 5 and I launch. I found some lift just out of the slot and was able to maintain as I worked over to the bowl north of launch. There I found some more lift and was able to s-turn my up to the top of the ridge. Worked a little further N and hooked one to 600' over. Then it was time to be flushed. 600fpm down in places and I was on my way to the LZ. Terry launched at about this time and had a quick sled to the LZ.

We quickly pack up and head back to launch to maybe do another flight. We go up in the tower and find it lightly blowing over the back. As we stand there and talk it starts to blow NW. We grab the gliders and quickly get setup. But not quickly enough. No wind to slightly over the back. I move to launch first again, wait for it to trickle up, call clear and launch. I had to run quite a way, but had a clean launch followed by quick trip to the LZ and the joy of landing amongst moving cows. Terry shortly follows.

Since both vehicles were now at launch, we called a cab. Yes, for those who don't know, Woodstock has its very own cab company. They take us to the top from the LZ for a very reasonable $13. Shenandoah Cab Co. is open from 7am-6pm Monday-Saturday. Their phone number is 540-459-5187. They were at the LZ within 10 minutes of us calling....not bad.
