Had two fun flights at the Rock today--scoring my first soaring flights on my Target. It was mainly a light thermal day--tho Eddie Miller came up around 6:00 to enjoy the pleasant evening glass off.

Learning to fly the single-surface well is proving to be rather difficult for me. For one thing I'm quite accustomed to cranking and banking when I hit a good thermal, it took me ten flights to figure out that a single surface isn't a double-surface efficiency blade in turns. Hard bank turns seem to generate pronounced tip-slides, I have yet to coordinate a steep bank turn on a single surface all the way around for a real thermal climbout.

On the other hand, I was amazed at how much it seems that the SS glider is very much like a paraglider in turns...You don't have to crank as hard because you can poosh out way more and slow down in lift. Once I (finally) clued in on this I was able to easily climb in the thermals today to 1500-1800 over. Definitely not as much work as a DS and really fun!

However, the SS does seem to share a limitation with paragliders, namely I find that the glide into the wind requires much more care when deciding on when to head out to the LZ--or even where you can go on a ridge relative to where you can land. I suspect that is why its more fun to just go over the back and go XC. Many of the things I take for granted on my topless are things which must be seriously considered when flying an SS.

Maybe thats why my many attempts at admission into the elite "Falconeros" have all been rejected.

ps Now that I have a digital camera and can get pics up on the net pretty quickly. Here are a few "quickies" at from the other day at the Rock. I couldn't resist taking the shots of our beloved Emma in her classic hang watching mode. Just go to: http://www.marcfink.com/imaging/hr6_5_01/index.htm

Just a few shots of towing with Brian Stoltzfus at Brownsville on Tuesday 6-05-01. My best flight was from a low tow to 400ft., with a climb in thermal to 1300ft. Flight time about 12 minutes. Highest tow of the day was to 800ft. in light wind.

Thanks Brian for another great day towing!
