Doug and I had chores to do before we could go flying. Such discipline. Ed Reno called us from the LZ to ask if we knew the USHGA radio frequencies. He reported it was blowing straight in but that it might be strong - no one had launched yet. We decided to head up anyway.

We arrived at the Rock at 2 pm and it was blowing pretty good - gusts to 40 mph. We set up anyway since it was a decreasing forecast. Very pleasant with the strong wind blowing - kept things a little cooler for us as we set up.

There weren't as many people as you'd expect for a nice Saturday. Tom McG, Judy McC, John McA, Mike C, Nick Stammers on vacation from England, Ed Reno, Steve Padgett, Steve Vogel, Geoff Mumford, Brian Hardwick (without glider), Marc Fink and Sheila. If I missed you, you should have written the list server. Jose left before it calmed down enough to launch. That'll teach him to have a hot date on a late day. Dan Tomlinson and Craig also left early. Tant pis, as we say in French. Everyone soared first time off - except for John McA. He blamed the huge sub he'd eaten right before launching.

I launched a little after 4 pm with Doug right behind me. Actually he was right under me when he launched. Didn't see me coming, but I was high enough so it wasn't a problem. We boated around in the light but plentiful lift. Got as high as 1K over. Doug and I had to land around 5 because we had guests coming for dinner and they were due to arrive at 7:30.

Ed Reno came down to get us and we observed him off. Would have observed Steve P. off also, but he hadn't done his duty yet at Emma Jane's. Accompanied him down there, introduced him to Emma Jane, dropped off Mike C's truck in the LZ, gave Judy and Tom a ride out to Emma Jane's so they could catch a ride with Steve to the top, and left for home. Got there at 7:20 with 4 messages on the machine. Three from our expected guests canceling out and one from my sister asking if we were going to the fireworks. We had enough food for 4 people, so we had her over for dinner instead.

The fireworks were SPECTACULAR. For those of you who suffer through the Mall fireworks every year, you don't know what you're missing. Just ask Joe and Janet Gregor.

We walked from the house to the big field where the fireworks are set off. A band was playing when we arrived and a little rain was falling. We'd brought umbrellas since we'd noticed a tall dark handsome cloud before heading out. We stood for about 10 minutes while the rain fell. Others less fortunate (and less well equipped) left. The rain stopped. We laid out the blankets. The fireworks started. Towards the end (about a half hour later), Mother Nature joined in with some thunder and lightning. Pretty exciting show.

You neglected the ever-lov'n John Middleton. Missed no doubt because he was always hiding out in the top of the stack!

Enjoyed a wonderful 2 hr. 14 minute flight on Saturday after waiting out gusts up to 40 mph until about 4:30 p.m. Landed a little early ‘cuz I thought it was shutting down and wanted to beat the rush to the LZ.

Fortunately there was plenty to do while waiting for the winds to die down as there was a lot of trash to pick up. Judy and Mike C. win the environmentalist of the year awards after picking up too many bags of trash to count - they are definitely relieved of the next flyable (or unflyable!) Work Party!! Many thanks to Dan Tomlinson for sacrificing his vehicle, and to Craig for sacrificing his nose - to get the trash to a dumpster [especially after leaving before it got flyable due to other commitments :-( ]. Other pass-the-time activities included trying on and hanging in Christy’s brand new harness - it’s wonderful! - And just catching some rays. It was a great surprise to see some folks in the LZ I haven’t seen in awhile including Brian Hardwick - can’t wait for Hyner!!

A fair number of pilots drove through the rain to get to a windy but dry and flyable towfarm. I logged 0+30 airtime; 1+30 'watching Geoff fly while everybody else gets extendos' time. Hangers on included Judy, Mike C., Steve T., Janet and I. Air was fairly gnarly, at times. The Fusion must be an easy glider to tow, 'cause I'm not _that_ good.

Surprisingly good day, given the forecast. Ya never know.

Jim and I went to Bill's Hill on Sunday. He wanted to fly the HPAT 145 so I took along the Eiger (breaks down to about seven feet). Winds were about ESE at 5 - 8 MPH under overcast skies (no rain). Jim got an extended sled and liked the way the HPAT turned, glided and landed.

I just got a sled on the Eiger. It's like a large Falcon; flies slow and requires lots of input/time to turn and has a steep glide ratio (if there's not much lift you head straight for the LZ; even at Bill's). Lots of fun to fly and very easy to land.

Jim is moving to Ft. Carson, Colorado on Wednesday. I am taking a week off to go with him to drive one of his cars. We will take the HPAT and meet Pete Farbish (former member of CHGA) at William's Peak for a 4th July fly in there.
