Very light and gentle conditions at the Rock all day on New Year's Eve-- too light at first. When we arrived, I asked Steve why he hadn't launched already and he replied, "I'm going to wait for a change and see how others do..." Exactly! Mike C. was the first one off and sunk like a rock. Seeing this, Mr. "I'll wait" was second and was immediately on the deck. As soon as he sunk out I knew that at some point it would turn on. Marc followed and valiently fought for a ten minute extendo. John Middleton and Proctor followed and likewise sledded. At about 3:30 it started to pick up and straighten out. We launched Carlos and, had his vario been working, he may have been able to stay up. Karen lept next and instananeously went up. Ellis and I quickly followed. I got to the top of the stack but it took FOREVER to get on top of my wife. Hmmmm, maybe I should rephrase that? Well, no, that's actually fairly accurate. Anyway, I got an hour, 900 over. Karen-- :50, 750 over. Ellis was a little lower and, of course, she was the last pilot down right at sunset eeking out 1:15. Mike C., Marc, and John slapped their gliders together in time to re-launch and each got 30-40 minutes. I started this year soaring at the Rock and it was great to end the year that way too...
Matthew (then it was off to madcap mall adventures with the Gregors, BHV, Mike C., etc, of Karen and Matthew)
p.s. Allen Sparks also flew and had an extendo yesterday. Thanks for coming down to the LZ with beer and giving us all a ride back to the top.
