Woodstock Thursday:
I arrived at launch around 2:00pm and found Steve Kinsley, Dave Proctor, Pete Schumann, Terry Spencer, Tom McGowan, and 3 out of town pilots from Philadelphia and NJ (Norm, Rick, and Bob Radcliffe). Pete launched first and Tom and Dave followed shortly thereafter. They were reporting rowdy air and not much altitude, so we waited for a while until Tom reported that he was 3000' over and everyone decided to launch. (except for Rick, who had some work to do on his glider). Conditions were rowdy at times, smooth at others. I got up pretty easily and found many thermals. Tom and I worked a great thermal near launch. I lost it at 3600' over launch and tom kept going. The sink was as strong as the lift. I registered a solid 1000' fpm down on my averager for two minutes. I landed after 1:30. Conditions were very rowdy on my approach, but not bad near the ground, so I had a good landing. Dave wasn't so fortunate. He hit massive sink on final and spun the glider on it's wheels, bending his keel in the process. I was sorry to hear that. Everyone, except Bob, flew as long as they wanted. Bob had an extended sled and returned to the top for another flight. He was still in the air when I left. Steve flew to near Front Royal ~24 miles. I don't know about Norm and Rick. All in all, a good day to play hookey.
