Steve and I arrived at the Woodstock LZ a little after noon and saw a
glider set up on top. When we got there, we found Nelson Lewis asleep at
the wheel. He had been set up since 11:15 and it was blown out. We set up
anyway in hope of diminishing winds. We had to wait a long time. Finally,
Nelson launched at 3:30pm into a lull and reported strong but not too
turbulent winds. I launched at 3:45 and Steve was soon after me. Also
flying were Terry Spencer and Tex Forrest. There were some thermals early.
The ridge lift was suprisingly weak even though the wind was pretty
straight in. I was only able to get about 1000' over. Steve and Nelson both
got over 2000' over. We all flew until sunset approached and had safe
landings in light conditions in the LZ.
Saw Mr. Fishburn. The well at the farm went dry and the well at his house is almost dry.. They desperately need rain.
