MOUNTAINEER AIRTIMES - WESTERN EDITION

7/2/98 - High Pt, NW O - 8 mph; a scratch & sniff day, but Will finds a good one which he takes to 7000' MSL and trys to fly upwind to his house only to get drilled before he gets there. He squeaks back to the ridge very low and ends up having to land minutes later. He did manage to score a rare victory in the spot contest.

7/4/98 - Hyner View, N O - 3 mph; JR, Gardner, Sheila, Tom, Christy & Doug, Pat B, Geoff, Wayne E, and Ben & LE show up for the Hyner Vlew festivities where they do silly things with fire. The flying at Hyner wasn't very good over this weekend due to the rain, fog, and low clouds, but the party was interesting with the Drag Races (the only known antidote to Viagra), the Statue of Liberty, Scooter Boy's naked fire jumping, and the various other forms of mayhem.

7/5/98 Kennedy, NNE 5 - 15 mph; Many of the above-named folks journeyed to this site on Sunday where many of them had good soaring flights while others didn't do as well. Sheila did particularly well and was rewarded with a really good flight.

7/11/98 High Pt N 5-10 mph; Homer, Larryboy, JR, Marvin, Doug and Chrlsty get varying amounts of soaring time on this scratch & sniff day. Fred was there but didn't fly. JR takes the spot money.

7/19/98 High Pt, N O - 5 mph; Day 1 of the Allegany Co Fair was somewhat soarable depending on when you launched. Larryboy, Will, Homer, Marvin, Doug & Christy & JR provided entertainment for the masses. Larryboy won the spot contest.

7/20/98 - 7/23/98: Will was supposed to keep track of who flew in the Fair on these days, but noooooo................

7/24/98 High Pt, NW 5 - l0mph; Day 6 of the Fair finds JR, Will, Larryboy, Homer, Christy h Doug showing up early. Everyone but Doug & JR went over the back and landed in the Hwy Dome field (about 12 miles). Christy made it back in time to fly w/ Doug h JR for the Fair w/ Ed Phillips showing up at the Fairgrds and launching from there to fly in the Fair, as well.

7/25/98 - Pinnacle, E O -6 mph: JR, Larryboy, Christy & Doug take an early flight on the backside and get sleds or extended sleds, although Christy got up for a little while. Wayne E chose not to fly.

7/25/98 - Fairgrds, E O - 7 mph; Day 7 of the Fair finds Larryboy, Christy & Doug, JR, and Marvin taking dives to fulfill the club's obligation as this launch is a good one for downwind dives in light conditions. Ben, LE, & Wayne E didn't fly because paraglidfrs don't fair as well inr these conditions.

8/2/98 Spruce Knob, NNE 5 - 10 mph; After cutting launch, JR, Danny, Stretch, Homer & Larryboy get sled rides to the LZ

8/6/98 - Pinnacle, ENE 3 - 8 mph; JR gets an extended sled, Greg gets about15 min soaring the ridge, and Will has the flight of the day making it down to the old Ducks launch where he lands behind the church (about 7 miles).

8/7/98 Pinnacle, E 4 - 9 mph; Marvin was the man on this day with about 20 min above the ridge. Will & JR had extended sleds, but Will wasn't able to get back to the main LZ and has to land a mile south along Knobley Rd.

9/2/98 - High Pt, SW 5 - 15+ mph; Homer, Marvin, & JR soar on this cross, somewhat trashy air day. After about an hour everyone had had about enough and headed out to land. Homer takes the spot money,

9/4/98 - North Mtn, NW 10 - 15 mph; The beginning of the Labor Day weekend starts out better than the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend. Larryboy and Mike B were the early arrivals and were able to fly to Seneca Rocks. JR gets off later with the help of Stretch and a wuffo. Stretch & Fred didn't fly as it was difficult getting off the ramp w/o a full wire crew.

9/5/98 - North Mtn, WNW 10 - 15 mph; the "official" start of Labor Day weekend saw a good turnout of old and new Mountaineers. There should be an article about the weekend elsewhere in this newsletter but everyone had decent launches, most everyone soared, and many made Seneca Rocks. Those present included: Larryboy, JR, Will, Homer, Mike B; a great low save), Fred, Mike C, Panties, Gardner, Christy & Doug, Kevin & Kelly, Judy, Stretch, Brian Hardwick, Mike Buckley, Bacil, Greg B, Greg D, & Ed Reno.

9/6/98 - North Mtn, W 10 - 15 mph; A repeat of the preceding day with everyone having safe launches, soaring, and many who made Seneca Rocks. Tom McGowan made an appearance along with everyone from the previous day except Bacil who chose to go to Daniels due to the SW forecast. We did have an accident in the main LZ when Kelly landed. Although it didnt't appear to be a very hard whack, she broke her arm ( humerous ) without doing any damage to the glider. This LZ hasn't proved very friendly to some of our "inside the Beltway" brethren in recent times.

9/11/98 - Zirks, NNW 5 - 15 mph; JR takes John Myers up for his first mountain launch, but the wind is too strong. Greg B launches and is able to get high enough to make it out to the Rt 220 LZ. JR launches as the sun dips behind Dan's Mtn and can't get enough altitude to make it out, so he lands at dusk in the main LZ.

9/12/98 - High Pt, W 10 - 20 mph; after taking John Myers up to Zirks early for his first mountain launch (way to go, John), JR and Homer head for High Pt where they meet up w/ Larryboy and soar in the somewhat strong air for an hour or two. Larryboy is afraid to test his landing skills against his peers in the main LZ where it's a little switchy, so he heads for and lands at the Rt 220 LZ in front of Zirks. Homer takes the money in the spot contest after JR tries to weasel out of the contest by declaring a SEM (Sudden Emergency Maneuver) when the wind switches from N to S as he is about to go on final, however, Homer is unsympathetic to this position and demands payment even after JR throws him to the ground by his ponytail (oops! wrong story).
