7/6/99 – Sand Turn, WY; JR, Larryboy and their faithful driver, Julie, take the first flight on their western excursion from this east-facing site on the front range of the Bighorn Mtns. They were able to hook up with local pilots, Jim and Sarah Bowman who live nearby on a former dude ranch complete with all amenities including guest houses, heated swimming pool, hot tub, trampoline, etc…. Both JR and Larryboy (and most everyone else) soared for an hour or two getting to 8 – 9000' MSL , but few pilots ventured far from launch. They have three LZ's that are used regularly. The bailout LZ closest to the mountain is not the preferred one, particularly on a high performance glider given its size, shape, and downhill nature( not to mention the boulders strewn randomly about). The "main" LZ is a football field at the local high school. It's a little tight if you're not used to spot landing, but it's nicely manicured and right beside the road. JR, Larryboy, Jim and Sarah all land at the football field.
7/7/99 – Sand Turn; JR, Larryboy and the several others fly with varying degrees of success. It stayed soarable for varying periods of time, but eventually everyone succumbed to the pull of gravity. JR and Larryboy get the thrill of landing in the bailout LZ and find it doable, but scary with the wind switching constantly. An interesting place to watch landings (from the ground).
7/8/99 – Sand Turn; A repeat of the preceding day in almost all aspects, except Larryboy took two flights. Again, he and JR got to try their hand at the bailout LZ and were able to pull off acceptable to good landings given the switchy nature of the wind and the challenging terrain. JR even managed to successfully pull off a downhill, downwind landing when it seemed he was doomed.
7/10/99 – Mt 7, B.C.; After collecting Homer at the Calgary airport, JR, Larryboy, and Julie finally make it to Golden and get to fly the beautiful alpine mountains of the Canadian Rockies. Launch is at 6370' MSL and the top of the mountain is about 8500' MSL. Typical launch time would 3:00 pm or later. Homer and JR scratch up from below launch to 9000' and take in the wonderful scenery. Larryboy worked hard, but missed finding the elevator.
7/11/99 – Mt 7; We quickly begin to realize that predicting when to launch at this fickle site will be a challenging decision, particularly given the cool, wet summer of 1999. JR, Larryboy, and Homer get extended sleds or brief soaring flights before landing in the expansive Nicholson LZ.
7/12/99 – Mt 7; A strong SW day (launch is at the end of spine which accommodates any direction except easterly. Most of the local pilots were spooked and the few that did fly complained about turbulence, so Homer, JR, and Larryboy didn't launch until late. As it turned out, one of the paraglider pilots flew 140 kilometers that day. Homer made it 14 miles and landed on the bench above the place where he and the other Mountaineers were staying. JR got to 7100', but never got high enough to leave the vicinity of the LZ. Larryboy missed the elevator again and fell more into his Mr Hyde character better known as Bummer Larry.
7/13/99 – Mt 7; The boys and girl are the only ones on launch most of the day as it was blowing mostly down (NE). They discuss the wisdom of downwind dives off the ramp and finally JR punches off, followed by Larryboy and Homer. It's pretty much a straight sled ride to the LZ.
7/16/99 – Mt 7; After a couple days of rain and clouds, Larryboy, Homer, and JR soar for an hour or so late in the day. They don't get very high, but are able to stay up when some others don't.
7/17/99 – Mt 7; Will makes his arrival and chooses a good day to begin his vacation. He gets the longest flight of the day getting 28 miles to Harrogate, with Larryboy getting 21 miles just s/o Parsons. Homer and JR bomb off the end of Kapristo Mtn and land 9.25 miles at Hunter's Mill.
7/19/99 – Mt 7; A cloudy overcast day. Everyone, including all the locals, takes sled rides except Will who gets above launch for about _ hour.
7/20/99 – Mt 7; A repeat of the preceding day with cloudy skies and end of the day sled rides. We're starting to think that Golden is not the place to be during a La Nina summer. Homer hasn't been feeling very well and sets his landing approach up to land close to the breakdown area. He misjudges and lands a little closer than planned when he flares onto Subaru Stu's HP-AT. No damage to either glider or the pilot.
7/22/99 – Mt 7; A better looking day with lennies in various spots up and down the valley. Homer has gotten pretty sick and stayed back at the crib in bed. We later find out he has mono and strepped throat. He's grounded for the rest of the trip and spent most of it on his back. JR gets to be the hero briefly when he launches after several people took sleds and gets up after sinking out well below launch. Will dives in on top of him and they both climb out. Larryboy flying Homer's Fusion for the first time, dives in underneath them, but can't get the glider to do what he wants and ends up heading for the LZ. Will out climbs JR and heads out on his own, landing 45 miles south near Brisco. JR flounders and quickly finds himself in the LZ with Larryboy and several other pilots.
7/23/99 – Mt 7; Another strange-looking day with lots of overdevelopment and lenticular clouds. This proved to be Larryboy's day when he made it 28 miles landing near Harrogate for probably the longest flight of the day. . Will, JR, and many of the other pilots soared, but when a big cell moved in and starting sucking everyone up at the same time, they all dove for sink and the safety of the LZ having heard too many horror stories from the locals about gust fronts in this narrow valley surrounded by big mountains. This proved to be the last flight of the trip.
7/29/99 – Zirks; Adam gets off first and gets an hour while JR and Homer both take sleds. Homer accidentally folds the mylar underneath the rear of his LE and finds out why they say you should always check that as part of your pre-flight.
8/2/99 – High Pt; Larryboy leads the day with a 24 mile flight to Augusta, WV. Will is not far behind at 22 miles. Stretch makes it 5 miles to the infamous PCR and JR has the ignoble distinction of barely getting up after launching last and then bombing out to LZ after struggling for 15 to 20 min at or below launch level.
8/3/99 – High Pt; A light NE day. Will and JR get extended sleds. Larryboy and Gardinator get about 10 minutes at 100' over launch before gravity has its way with them.
8/7/99 – Fisher's Rd; A crap shoot day early with several sleds and some re-flights. JR, Larryboy, Homer, and others took early sleds with Homer's being the most eventful (scratch one downtube). Larry H soared briefly before sinking out. Later, Pete and Panties got up and went over the back and Larryboy soared on his second flight, along with Jim Meadows.
8/9/99 – High Pt; Will gets 1 _ hrs for the flight of the day on this north cross afternoon. Adam manages 30 min and JR is scraped off the ridge after 15 min, but takes the spot money.
8/15/99 – High Pt; JR, Larryboy and Christy get a couple hours on this cloudy, hazy day. Christy gets her first flight on the Super Sport she bought from Kim. Although 3000' MSL was about as high as anyone could get, it was quite soarable even flying way out front into the valley. JR takes the spot money.
8/21/99 – High Pt; JR and John Meyers get brief soaring flights or extended sleds. Jimmy Long showed up to drive.
8/22/99 – High Pt; Marvin, JR, and John Meyers take sleds on this light NE day. John shows he can hang with the big boys when he walks away with the spot money.
8/28/99 – High Pt; The early launchers all took sled rides including Marvin, John Meyers, and JR (won the spot money). Christy, Homer, and Adam all soared and Homer made it 12.miles to the Hwy Dome LZ later in the afternoon.
8/29/99 – High Pt; A strong N day allowed everyone to soar including: Homer, John M, Christy, JR, Adam, Danny, and Stretch. It was a punchy day, although no one got particularly high. It made for some interesting landings with a strong gradient near the ground. JR won the spot contest.
9/3 – 9/6/99 – Labor Day weekend at Seneca Rocks; ????????????
9/10/99 – High Pt; Homer, Gardinator, JR, and Adam all soar on this somewhat strong W day. As usual on strong W days, the wind in the LZ was very switchy and that made landing a challenge. Adam chooses the wrong direction and just kisses the fence at the S end of the LZ. It was pretty cyclic and eventually everyone was flushed. Homer again makes a terrible error when he taunts JR for landing so far from the spot even though Homer hadn't landed yet. The consequence? JR again takes the spot money.
9/11/99 – High Pt; Another cyclic day with the early launchers getting flushed after getting up briefly. JR, Adam, Larryboy, Doug, and John M all succumb to the pull of gravity. Christy and Homer manage to stay up. Gardinator and Steve Krichton launch, get up, and go over the back with Homer. Homer makes the Chicken Farm for 9 miles. Steve and Gardinator make the Hwy Dome LZ for 12 miles after flying back upwind to reach it. JR, Adam, Doug, and Larryboy all fly again. Larryboy gets away and lands in the Hwy Dome LZ with the others.
9/12/99 – Fisher's Rd; Mixed results at this site which typically turns on later in the day. Larry H was able to get up and over the back for ?? miles. Homer, JR, and Jim Meadows took sleds. Gardinator, Larryboy, and Judy soared for varying lengths of time as the day wore on.
10/1/99 – Fairgrds; Gardinator and JR fly this seldom used site after realizing that they didn't have a key for the gate at High Pt. It works out well, as it turns out to be quite soarable on this SW day. Both pilots flew for an hour or two with Gardinator getting the best gain to 6250' MSL. Much of the time was spent climbing in the middle of the valley out in front of High Pt launch. The air started out a little strong, particularly on the W face, but by late afternoon it had gotten quite enjoyable. Gardinator takes the spot money to make his victory for the day complete.
